Be Still and Know I Am God
Today’s topic is a continuation from the Series ‘Songs In The Night, Finding God in The Highs and Lows’. The main focus of today’s Sunday message is from Psalms 46, a psalm that encourages us to trust on God, on His power, providence and sovereignty during the worst times. Today’s message brings so much comfort and blessing especially now that the battle against COVID-19 is still not yet over.
Looking back, ever since this pandemic began, I am rested in the knowledge that our God is a sovereign God. I don’t know will never know the reasons why this is happening right now, and how this tragedy impaired so much in all areas of our lives, but I trust God and I know He will accomplish His purpose. But there are still times where I will think about the uncertainty of the future and how much anxiety this brings me, but I am always reminded of the great comfort and security that is found only in Jesus Christ alone and that is more than enough for me to feel rested and to stop worrying about what will happens next and the threat of this pandemic.
Today’s message is great reminder that by ceasing in striving, we will know that God is our Refuge, our Rescuer and our Rest. When we have problems, what we need to do is run towards God, not away from Him.
Psalm 46 (ESV)
1 God is our refuge and strength,
a very present help in trouble.
2 Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way,
though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea,
3 though its waters roar and foam,
though the mountains tremble at its swelling. Selah
4 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,
the holy habitation of the Most High.
5 God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved;
God will help her when morning dawns.
6 The nations rage, the kingdoms totter;
he utters his voice, the earth melts.
7 The Lord of hosts is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah
8 Come, behold the works of the Lord,
how he has brought desolations on the earth.
9 He makes wars cease to the end of the earth;
he breaks the bow and shatters the spear;
he burns the chariots with fire.
10 “Be still, and know that I am God.
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth!”
11 The Lord of hosts is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah

2. What makes you restless?
3. Why is knowing GOD so important?
4. What promises can you claim based on Psalm 46
1. When you encounter problems, what do you usually do?
To be honest, the first thing that crosses my mind whenever I encounter problems is how can I solve it immediately and how should I respond to it without bringing me too much anxiety. But as I learn to know more about the Word, I know the first thing I need to do is get on my knees and pray. Surrender it all to God first and pray to Him, tell Him all your worries, about your problems and being honest that I cannot solve this problem on my own.
2. What makes you restless?
Uncertainty about the future is what makes me restless and keeps me awake at night. But God’s faithfulness in my life and His sovereignty gives me rest and comfort.
3. Why is knowing GOD so important?
Pastor Peter said that the knowledge of who God is, is foundational to our Christian life. Similarly, AW Tozer said that what comes to our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us. Proper Theology is needed. If we don’t have the right theology, we will never know why knowing God is important. This will lead to interpreting God based on our circumstances. And this is not the correct way. The right way is we interpret circumstances based on who God is, not the other way around. Remember that wrong theology, or wrong knowledge of God will impact your emotions and actions. But if we know that God is God — that He is a sovereign God, we can respond to our problems accordingly.
4. What promises can you claim based on Psalm 46
Not to fear because God is always with us – Emmanuel.
